It is too bad ... I was really looking forward to this based on reputation, and had hoped it would be so much less mediocre than it was ...

Only mediocre because it's been so surpassed. Your review got it right - not disagreeing - but when PaRappa hit is was just an amazingly new idea.

The PSX version did come with a poster. Not giant, but a poster nonetheless, with all the masters.

I still don't think Parappa has been bested in charm, though Lammy's ditziness comes close in her game. Incidentally, Um Jammer Lammy really improves upon Parappa's presentation, with the game's length extended much further with unlockable duel and co-op modes and then unlocking Parappa so it's like you get a whole 'nother load of songs if you play as him.

Would have been nice if some of that made it to the PSP release ...
