I decided to fiddle with my PSP yesterday and the numeric rating is so completely unintuitive as to be useless - how do I really know what I'm blocking / allowing but for trial and error ...

Compared to the Xbox, their controls are weak sauce all over. I was especially put-out to see the code to circumvent them actually printed in the manual.

I'm working with a friend to try to get access to a machine and try to work out exactly what each number cooresponds to. When I do, I'll put together an article.
