Okay, I'm already getting email over this controversial review...

Look, before everyone reams Cary Woodham, I want everyone to know that I played Zelda for a while, I didn't like it, and I punted the review to Cary figuring that my dislike was due to my advanced age and my lack of real love for the Zelda series.

Cary loves Zelda, Cary loves Nintendo, Cary gave this game a fair and honest review - like he's always done and like I expected him to do.

At GamerDad we have NO INTEREST AT ALL in matching other site's review scores and 4 out of 5 is 80%. A solid B. I'm standing behind Cary and his review with my arms folded and a stern look on my face.

If you disagree, if you love the game, then more power to you! Just remember that at GamerDad you're going to get our honest opinions without bias or fanboyism. If that means you disagree with us now and then, that's good. It makes everybody think.

So, if you want to politely refute Cary's review, please feel free to use this thread to do so. Remember, I said "politely."

Thanks,
GamerDad

I'm enjoying it so far. I'm about 7 hours in.

It does start a bit slow. The twilight effects are hard on the eyes, but perhaps purposely so. No problem with fetch quests here.

ONly another 40 hours to go.

Knowing Cary- I totally understand where he's coming from, he's explained it several times, and he presented valid points as to why he didn't like it in the review itself.

Excellent write up...what was the score 2/5 or something  I didn't look

besides...If I don't like it...I'll drop you a second opinion review but the only differences would be the fact that I think the new art style is FREAKIN AWESOME!...but that's me. 8)

Don't let the 'fannies' bug you Cary.

and yes, that's a double meaning on fannie there

So does this mean they're going to stop giving us crap for our Halo review? ;)

He gave it a 4 and a 10+ age seal - what exactly were they expecting? The herald of the second coming?

That said, we haven't had any troubles on our TV and we're running standard TV resolution with the standard cables. My TV is a 36" though and I keep it religiously color matched (badly adjusted alpha drives me so far up the wall it's not even funny - professional hazard). That bigger size might be a part of it. But I agree in the main. This isn't exactly Gears of War, and I can understand where the low contrast might be giving people problems.

Johnathan's almost done, and the girls are about 3/4 of the way through their game. We'll see when we get to the end.

People expect all reviews to be in lockstep.
So, we've gotten a few peices of hatemail because, apparently, we now have the lowest or second lowest score. My response to someone disagreeing with one of my reviews is usually:

"Hey, you like it more than I do. That's awesome! You got your money's worth then."

That's idiotic. They want more opinions from different people so they go someplace and cross-reference, but get mad when they're not the same?

Am I missing something here, or are they?

I'm sorry - but if an 80% puts us on the lowest end, then so be it.

Yeah, but that's the Internet for you!
It should be said that these letters are only coming through link sites and GameRankings for now, of course. I only mentioned it here because I thought maybe a message from me in this thread might make a few of them choose not to email me. So far it's worked, but I want to reiterate:

Readers:
If you'd like to argue politely with Cary and GamerDad (and Momgamer and, heck, everyone else), you're welcome to in this thread!

Sorry if my review is causing you more trouble, Andrew. I treid to be really fair about it. At first, I wanted to give it a score of 3 and a half stars, but I figured that since I've been playing it pretty nonstop since I got the Wii, it should probably get four stars. I just liked other Zelda games (and Okami), much, much better. --Cary

No trouble at all my good man!
I live for this sort of thing. I also happen to completely and absolutely agree with you about it. I'm behind you, arms crossed, as I said!

(As people are noting "4 out of 5" is only a bad score if you look at it as "80%" (which is what GameRankings does). I put "controversial" in quotes above for that very reason. There really isn't any controversy beyond: "I love it!" and "You do? Well I just like it."

Yeah, 4/5 doesn't translate to 80% at all. Well, it does, but you know what I mean ;)

So what part of "Good game, worth buying" bothers people? :)

This is exactly what is wrong with numerical scoring - people look at GameRankings one day and see 96.4 and it is the 2nd or 3rd 'best game ever', the next day it dropped a tenth and is now 6th ... big whoop!

4/5 indicates a solid game that is recommended. We've given 5/5 based on certain criteria that put us on the 'high end', as well as these 'low' reviews.

Who cares?

BTW - do you know the grief I've taken over my 2.5/5 (also 5/10 elsewhere) reviews of Dark Messiah ... they get upset because I was too low on the scale.

Oh well.

Yay Cary! Way to stick it to "the man"! (I have no idea what I mean by that...)

That 3.5 vs 4 breakpoint is always a hard one for me as well.

I'm less a fan of the Zelda series as most people, so I'm happy with your review. (I've always felt it was often a bit non-intuitive, especially to anyone trying to "hop in" the series for the first time...)

To go off-topic on the score you gave, I'm planning on picking this game up tomorrow (on GC), and am wondering what you guys think the best way to play the game is.

Should I go through the main quest on my first playthrough while picking up as little power ups, quarter hearts etc. as possible, in order to up the difficulty? I heard the game is pretty easy, so this sounds like a good idea, but if sidequests and mini-games make up the funnest part of the game, I wouldn't want to miss out on it the first time through, although I could also delegate them to just before the finale.

Does the atmosphere of the game lend itself better to spanish, german or french? (I hardly ever play in english, since that makes all the riddles etc. far too obvious) Wind waker's playfull undertones made it much more compatible with spanish, in my opinion, whereas Majora's mask's Grimm fairytale-like setting worked really well with german. I vaguely recall hearing rumours about there being a more romantic undertone in Twilight Princess, in which case french might work really well. What alternate language do you think would work best?

Do you think the game is better suited to lone play, or would going through it while taking turns with someone else be better suited? Would the game be enjoyed better if I tried to get through it fairly fast, or should I try to linguish(is that the correct english term?) the experience and only play an hour or two a day?

I have a pretty good idea of how I want to play through the game, but wanted to run it by some people who already played it, hoping to find the best way to enjoy the game. thanks for any responses, and try to keep spoilers to a minimum please.

not that its my business, but before my wii broke i played this game when ever my younger sibs went out (too violent for them too watch after the sword in the evil guy scene and the girl with the knife by link scene) but you should'nt get critizised (bad spelling sorry) for haveing a diffrent opinion than other sites. Before buying a game ill check many sites to help make a decision. Zelda games were always entertaining to me, but at the same time frustrateing. I remember playing the 64 game of zelda and getting scared in the dark temple (i was like 6 or 7) but now that doesnt faze me. but now twilight ill admit scared me a few times with certain cutscenses (me being 15 now) but its nothing i couldnt handel. but thats beside the point. Everyone has their own opinion own mind and own outlook at the world, so why should someone be insulted for not likeing a game? you shouldnt. its ok to debate if you have good reason, but theres no need to insult the site and everyone who works here... i guess this topic is old now, but i couldnt help but make a point
