Great review Cary, but just so you know Kakashi-sensei is not reading a girly magazine, per se. It's a romance novel whose title translated as "Make-out Paradise". Think Harlequin bodice ripper rather than anatomically correct pictures, if you know what I mean. He reads them while training the kids several times in the series. Actually he reads them all the time. He is seriously addicted to them. It comes out in the show.

You see the reading-in-battle thing all over in anime. It's a standard story device to demonstrate how much better the master is than the student if he can kick your butt while reading. Another example would be Izumi Chen, who does the same thing while teaching Ed and Al in Fullmetal Alchemist.
