Nice review.

A couple things worth mentioning that didn't make it into the review:

1. The game is quite moddable, with a small mod community actively working to create new content, which helps to extend replay value.

2. As pointed out, the battle engine is kind of hard. It's easy to use, it's just hard to win battles if you don't have a sense of tactics -- just diving straight in will get you killed. However, combined with point 1, it's easy to create a mod that allows kids to play and win, just by increasing the strength of the initial ships. :)

Disclaimer: I'm one of the Fearless Testers listed in the credits. This gives me loads of perspective, since I've played a lot, but does color my view positively. I have no financial interest, though.

Thanks for pointing that stuff out! I know Matt mentioned elsewhere that he mostly avoided combat since he had a hard time winning. So if you could get a ship that kept you alive better from the start that would be very advantageous!

Great to see 'little' games like this that are so well made!

Cool.

None of the contacts I have with the company mentioned the mod community, so I wasn't aware of it. (And the design didn't necessarily scream out that it was set up to be widely modded, so I didn't think to go look for it...)

Having a source of mods to improve the variability/newness of the game would give it a nice bump in reccomendation from me...

Glad to be informed...

The game comes with a sample SuperPirate mod. (At one point I put together a SuperFrigate mod, but then the game was just WAY too easy.) ;)

The independent mod community hangs out at the Infinite Space Federation site:

The publisher's forums also play host to modmaking discussion:

And I thought the "MODS" button on the startup screen was a hint about mod-ability, myself. At least, when it showed up in one of the beta builds, I noticed right away. :)

Digital Eel has a modding guide up, with some good information:

OK, ok, I concede. I don't know what I'm talking about... :)

To clarify, I don't _remember_ what I'm talking about... I finished up that review two months ago, so just am not remembering everything clearly...

I'll have to look into some of the available mods. After reviewing it, I had become bored with the standard options.....
