It's a good thing that this game has excellent word of mouth and good reviews, because based on that cover art, it shouldn't sell a single copy. Ugh.

I actually thought the cover art was funky ... but then I laugh during Eraserhead ...

I've never bought a game based on cover art, though, so I can't relate to how that matters - plus I throw my boxes away after removing the 'meat'.

The cover art is a resounding success. My first impression upon seeing it was "X-com for the gameboy?"

My viseral reaction was an all pervasive feeling of "joyfully paying full price."

See, I figured that anyone with a GBA and a fondness for X-Com already knew what it was, I just don't think it's all that appealing to anyone else.

So, I gather the combat is very X-Com like... (anyone remember email X-Com or play Laser Squad Nemesis?)

How is the backstory? You mention you can upgrade your units... is the base & unit upgrading there like in the original X-Com...? If it was a shoddy job of the non-combat preparation stuff I might be less interested... the RPG aspect of X-Com adds a lot to the game for me... I have enough firefight games... (not on the GBA/DS though...)

I thought that the story was pretty good - simple but effective and told by quick scenes in between missions. You do care about the characters - not quite like Fire Emblem, but still ... The upgrades are unit-only skill enhancements - you can really specialize and see instant results in your combat effectiveness.

I thought the game was a blast - I bought it with pretty flat expectations for a decent price and was very pleased.

IMHO, that's why it's a good advertisement -- it targets the target audience.
